Gabions are manufactured from hard-drawn welded wire with mesh size 76.2 mm × 76.2 mm, available in wire diameters of 3.0 mm, 4.0 mm and 5.0 mm.
The wire is coated with Triple Life corrosion protection (95% Zinc / 5% Aluminium) with a minimum coat weight of 240 g/m². Units are supplied with appropriate lacing wire or helicals for assembly and erection. All wire conforms to BS 1052.
Gabions are manufactured from hard-drawn welded wire, mesh size 76.2 mm × 76.2 mm, with zinc and green PVC coatings. Available wire diameters: 3.0 / 3.5 mm and 3.8 / 4.3 mm.
Produced to international standards: wire to BS 1052; zinc coating to BS EN 10244-2:2001; PVC coating by fusion-bond method to DIN 3036 Part 2 and ASTM F668-88 Type Class 2b. Minimum PVC coating thickness is 0.25 mm.
The mesh complies with BS 2782 Part 5, Method 540B (ISO 4892) as required by the Highways Agency White Book (section 6.26/4, amended August 1994) and the European/British Standard BS EN 10223-8:2013.
Suitable where flexibility is required (e.g. erosion control structures). For structural works 2–3 m high, 3 mm wire is normally adequate. Hand-packing the face improves alignment and reduces deflection.
For structural works 3–6 m high, use 3 mm body mesh with a heavier facing mesh of 4 mm or 5 mm. For specialist architectural facings where a high quality of construction is required, the minimum wire diameter should be 4 mm.
For structures over 6 m, it is recommended to use 5 mm wire for the lower courses, changing to 4 mm for the upper courses to balance strength and economy.
A hexagonal mesh gabion box is formed by weaving wire into a hexagonal mesh. The unit is divided into cells by diaphragms placed every metre. Panels are connected with lacing wire, and the mesh is reinforced with thicker selvedge wires for higher bearing capacity and longer service life.
Hexagonal mesh gabions offer high deformability and can be adjusted on site. With no welding points, they resist erosion from flood and seawater particularly well. The twisted structure provides high tensile strength for heavy-duty applications such as river and dam protection.
Welded gabion boxes are made from high-tensile steel wire welded into rigid panels. They are assembled quickly using hog rings, spiral joints, U-clips or hooks. These connections reinforce the box so that it holds its shape under load.
Compared with hexagonal mesh, welded gabions keep a precise shape and fit architectural or landscape designs cleanly. They are widely used for garden walls, planters, seating, cladding and decorative features as well as structural retaining work.
